Chanel Classic Flap Medium

quilted flap bag with a leather-interwoven chain strap and a CC turn-lock

Chanel Classic Flap Medium at a glance

The Chanel Classic Flap Medium is the 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm tier of the quilted flap family: a soft caviar or lambskin body, a leather-interwoven chain quoted at a 44 cm single drop, and a CC turn-lock. It is the first Classic Flap size that takes a phone, a full wallet, a compact mirror and a small power bank together, which is why our size guide treats it as the office and travel tier for taller frames.

Classic Flap Medium measurements in centimetres and inches

Chanel prints its dimension line as height, then width, then depth, which is the single most common reason two charts disagree about this bag. The rows below use width x height x depth, the order this site uses everywhere, and each row states which record it was read from. Where a figure is not published anywhere on the site, the row says so instead of being filled with an estimate.

Two measurement conventions circulate for this tier. Some third-party tables print 25.5 x 15.5 x 6.5 cm for the same bag; our size guide and this page follow 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm, and the difference is the familiar one between measuring the body at its resting shape and measuring the panel before it is assembled. Neither number is a mistake, but a chart that lists both without saying which is which will look inconsistent the moment it also lists the Small, so this page prints the guide figure and records the other one here.

Classic Flap Medium against the rest of the Classic Flap range

The Classic Flap steps in six tiers and the Boy line adds five more. Width climbs steadily, but depth is the number that changes what the bag is for: 5 cm and 6 cm on the two Minis, 6 cm on the Small, 7.5 cm here, then 10 cm from the Jumbo up.

TierWidthHeightDepthChain or strap dropWhat the step changes
Mini Square17 cm / 6.7 in17 cm / 6.7 in6 cm / 2.4 in54 cm chainTallest small body; a phone stands upright and little else fits beside it
Mini Rectangular20 cm / 7.9 in13 cm / 5.1 in5 cm / 2.0 in58 cm chainWidest of the two Minis but the shallowest body in the range

Maxi33 cm / 13.0 in23 cm / 9.0 in10 cm / 3.9 in58 cm singleThe travel tier of the line, longest strap of the six
Boy Small (adjacent line)20.6 cm / 8.1 in11.9 cm / 4.7 in8.4 cm / 3.3 in30.5 cm doubled / 53.3 cm singleWider front to back than the Small Classic Flap, but a rigid body
Boy Old Medium (adjacent line)24.9 cm / 9.8 in15 cm / 5.9 in8.9 cm / 3.5 in30.5 cm doubled / 50.8 cm singleClosest Boy to this tier in width, with a chunkier chain

The Boy comparison is worth keeping in view because the two lines read differently on the body even when the widths nearly match. This tier is 25.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm deep; the Boy Old Medium is 24.9 cm wide and 8.9 cm deep, so the Classic Flap is the flatter bag and the Boy the more projecting one. Our size guide notes the second half of that trade as well: the Classic Flap's softer body gives more usable space at the same listed size, while the Boy's rigid construction holds its shape over time.

Every published size in the Classic Flap range

Chanel publishes the Classic Flap as a ladder of six tiers; the tier word matters less than the width, because the same word is used for different bodies across years.

Every centimetre above is printed in this site’s own records; inch values are the same figures converted at 2.54 cm per inch and rounded to one decimal, so no page carries a second set of inches. Rows marked as reference points are neighbouring models published on this site, not Classic Flap tiers — they are here to give the ladder a scale.

The same figures are indexed, with the source page and the date each one was checked, in the Luxury Bag Size Index — the cross-brand table that holds the published centimetre figures for bags, belts and shoes in one place.

Dimensions in cm and inches

The Medium is one rung of a six-tier ladder, and Chanel prints its own dimensions in a different order than most size charts.

The Classic Flap Medium is published at 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm, which is 10 x 6.3 x 2.9 inches. In the six-tier ladder this site publishes, the tiers run Mini Square 17 x 17 x 6 cm, Mini Rectangular 20 x 13 x 5 cm, Small 23 x 14.5 x 6 cm, Medium 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm, Jumbo 30 x 19.5 x 10 cm and Maxi 33 x 23 x 10 cm — so the Medium is the middle of the range and the first tier the guide lists as taking all six everyday items.

The published chain figures move in the opposite direction to the size: 58 cm on the rectangular Mini, 42 cm single on the Small, 44 cm single on the Medium, and 33 cm doubled on the Jumbo. A larger flap therefore hangs higher on the body than a smaller one, which is the opposite of what most buyers assume when they size up.

Inch values are the published centimetres converted at 2.54 cm per inch and rounded to one decimal, the same rule the guides use. Rows with no published figure say so.

How to recognise it in a photo

Diamond-quilted flap with a leather-interwoven chain and a CC turn-lock on the front; the medium measures about 25.5 cm across.

Not this style when: A fine square-link chain with a rectangular clasp is a 2.55.

The features below are the ones that stay visible in an album photo taken at arm's length. They identify the family and the tier, and the last two are the ones to ask for when a listing does not say which size it is.

  1. Diamond quilting across the flap and the body, in the same scale on both panels rather than a larger quilt on the flap alone.
  2. A leather-interwoven chain: leather runs through every link, which is what separates this chain from the chunky bare-metal chain with a single leather panel on the Boy.
  3. A CC turn-lock in the centre of the flap, sitting flush rather than raised on a plate.
  4. A single outer flap with a second, smaller flap under it, which is the detail that separates a Classic Flap from a single-flap bag.
  5. Flap edge open to a roughly 16 cm tall body, so the bag reads slightly taller than it is wide when it is photographed closed and empty.
  6. A body that slouches inward when it is set down empty; the quilting softens at the sides, which is part of how this line reads compared with a rigid flap.
  7. A measuring tape or a phone laid against the body in at least one frame: 25.5 cm at the widest point is the figure that separates this tier from the 23 cm Small.
  8. A photo of the chain lying straight, because a 44 cm single drop and the long-chain version look identical when the chain is coiled in the dust bag.

What actually fits inside a 25.5 cm Classic Flap

The Classic Flap is a soft-bodied bag, so its published 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm behaves differently from a rigid box with the same numbers. Our size guide records the load this tier is documented to carry, and the notes below follow that record rather than an inside measurement.

A phone, a full wallet, keys, a lipstick, a compact mirror and a small power bank all fit, which is the set the guide uses to separate the Medium from the tiers below it. The 7.5 cm depth is what makes that possible: the Small at 6 cm takes the same items without the power bank.

Nothing with a spine fits. An A5 notebook stands above the flap line in a 16 cm tall body, so the Medium is a personal-items flap rather than a document bag, however much the 25.5 cm width suggests otherwise.

  • A phone of any current size, laid flat on the base with the flap closed over it.
  • A full-length wallet: the Medium is the first tier in the line where the capacity table lists a full wallet rather than a card holder.
  • Keys and a lipstick, which sit in the remaining flat space without pressing the flap.
  • A compact mirror, which is where the 7.5 cm depth starts to matter: the 6 cm Small is the tier where the mirror stops fitting.
  • A small power bank alongside the wallet, the last row our capacity table lists as a yes for this size and a no for the Small.
  • Not a water bottle or a tablet: nothing rigid and tall is listed for this tier, and a 7.5 cm gusset is the reason.
  • Not a 13 inch laptop: the bag's height and depth rule it out at every tier in the line, which is why the guide points laptop buyers to tote shapes instead.

Every item above is read from the capacity table in our Chanel Classic Flap size guide and from the published external dimensions, not from measuring the inside of a specific bag. Treat it as an estimate for the size: a soft flap gains and loses a little usable space depending on how full it is, so confirm the load you care about with a photo of the actual piece.

Capacity notes here follow the item table published in this site’s Classic Flap guide, which marks the Medium as the first tier that takes a small power bank.

How it compares with the next size up

The tiers immediately either side of the Medium are the Small and the Jumbo; both are published on this site.

Down a tier, the Small at 23 x 14.5 x 6 cm gives up 2.5 cm of width and 1.5 cm of depth, which is exactly the difference between a full wallet plus a phone and the same load with a power bank. The chain changes too: 42 cm single on the Small against 44 cm single on the Medium, so the larger bag sits marginally higher rather than lower.

Up a tier, the Jumbo at 30 x 19.5 x 10 cm adds 4.5 cm of width, 3.5 cm of height and 2.5 cm of depth, and its chain is published as 33 cm doubled. That is the tier where the bag reads as a shoulder bag carried under the arm rather than a crossbody, and where a folded scarf starts to be realistic.

Compared values are the published outside measurements listed in the ladder table above.

Leather, colour and hardware options recorded for this style

Four choices decide how this bag behaves day to day: the leather, the colour, the hardware tone and the chain length. Each one is recorded on this site, and none of them changes a single measurement.

Leather
Lambskin and caviar-grained calfskin are both on record for this style. Our size guide sets out the practical difference: caviar resists scratches and holds its shape, which suits daily use, while lambskin is softer with a richer sheen and suits occasional or evening carry. Buyers who want one bag for everything pick caviar.
Colour
The permanent collection covers the core colourways, and seasonal runs add tones such as beige, pink, navy and burgundy. Seasonal colours are produced in limited runs and do not restock, so colour is the option most worth confirming on the specific piece rather than from a family name.
Hardware tone
Gold and silver are the two tones recorded for this style. The tone does not change capacity, the chain or the flap, and both are photographed the same way once the bag is closed.
Chain
The standard chain is leather-interwoven and quoted at 44 cm as a single length. The long-chain option adds about 10 cm of drop for crossbody wear on taller frames, and our guide records it as available on the Small, Medium and Jumbo rather than on the Minis.

Classic Flap Medium questions buyers send us

Is 25.5 cm the Medium or the Large Classic Flap?

Chanel documents both names against the same 25.5 x 16 x 7.5 cm body, which is why this page is headed Medium and the size guide labels the row Medium / Large. What matters is the number: 25.5 cm across is this tier, 23 cm is the Small, and 30 cm is the Jumbo.

What is the chain drop on a Classic Flap Medium?

Our size guide lists 44 cm as the single-length drop for this tier, and does not publish a separate doubled figure. The long-chain version adds about 10 cm of drop, which is the version to ask about if you want to wear it crossbody on a tall frame.

Does a full-size wallet fit in the Medium?

Yes, and that is the clearest difference between this tier and the Small. Our capacity table lists a full wallet for the Medium and a card holder for the Small, with a small power bank also appearing at this size and not below it.

How does the Medium compare with the Boy Old Medium?

The two are within a centimetre of each other in width, 25.5 cm against 24.9 cm, but they are different bags in the hand. The Classic Flap is 7.5 cm deep and 16 cm tall with a leather-interwoven chain, while the Boy is 8.9 cm deep and 15 cm tall with a chunkier chain and a rigid body.

Can a photo tell me which Classic Flap size a listing is?

Not on its own. The quilting, the CC turn-lock and the interwoven chain are shared by every tier, so a head-on photo of an empty bag gives no scale. Ask for one frame with a tape across the widest point, or a phone laid against the body, and the measurement settles it.

Which height does this size suit?

Our size guide puts the Medium in the recommended range from 165 cm upward and lists it as a size to avoid under 155 cm, where the Mini and Small read more in proportion. Height is a styling judgement rather than a measurement, so treat the guide's band as a starting point.
