Hermès Kelly 25

structured top-handle trapezoid with a single top handle, front flap and two side straps

Hermes Kelly 25 in one paragraph

The Hermes Kelly 25 is the compact everyday tier of the Kelly line, published at 25 x 19 x 9 cm: a structured trapezoid with a single top handle, a front flap, a touret turn-lock and two side straps. Our Kelly guide describes it as the size that still takes a full-size phone, a wallet, keys and small daily items where the 20 cm Mini Kelly does not.

Kelly 25 measurements in centimetres and inches

Two of our own pages print a slightly different measurement line for this tier, so the rows below state which record each figure comes from. Everything on the page follows the dedicated Kelly guide and the model record; the second version is printed in the note rather than smoothed away.

One figure set is used across this site for this tier: the dedicated Kelly guide, the Birkin versus Kelly comparison and the model record all give 25 x 19 x 9 cm. A second publisher set prints the same tier at 25 x 18 x 10 cm, a 1 cm difference in height and depth rather than a different bag; both lines are printed side by side on the comparison guide rather than averaged. The 25 x 19 x 9 cm line is the one this page follows.

The Kelly 25 against the Mini, 28 and 32

The Kelly offers more stops in the small-to-medium band than most houses: Mini 20, Pochette 21.6, 25, 28 and 32, before the larger sizes. The table uses the Kelly guide's family figures, with the neighbouring Birkin rows that buyers compare against.

TierWidth x height x depthDocumented roleCompared with the Kelly 25

Kelly 2828 x 22 x 10 cmClassic mid-size3 cm wider and 1 cm deeper; the guide calls the Retourne 28 the most versatile starting point
Kelly 3232 x 23 x 10.5 cmLarger structured tote7 cm wider; reads as a tote on most frames
Birkin 25 (adjacent model)25 x 19 x 13 cmOpen-top hand carry with two handlesSame width, 4 cm deeper, and no shoulder strap at any size
Birkin 30 (adjacent model)30 x 22 x 16 cmRoomier open-top carry5 cm wider and 7 cm deeper than the Kelly 25

Two structural points run through this table. The Kelly carries one handle plus a detachable strap, so it can be hand, shoulder or crossbody, while the Birkin has two handles and no strap at any size. And the Kelly is meant to be carried closed, so access takes one extra step compared with the open-top Birkin - which is the trade buyers are really deciding between at this size, not which bag has more depth.

Every published size in the Kelly range

Kelly sizes are the number in the name: 20 (Mini Kelly II), Pochette, 25, 28, 32, 35, 40 and 50. The Kelly-specific guide and the Birkin vs Kelly comparison now print the same figures for 20/25/28/32; a second publisher set for 25/28/32/35 is printed on the comparison page side by side rather than averaged.

Every centimetre above is printed in this site’s own records; inch values are the same figures converted at 2.54 cm per inch and rounded to one decimal, so no page carries a second set of inches. Rows marked as reference points are neighbouring models published on this site, not Kelly tiers — they are here to give the ladder a scale.

The same figures are indexed, with the source page and the date each one was checked, in the Luxury Bag Size Index — the cross-brand table that holds the published centimetre figures for bags, belts and shoes in one place.

Dimensions in cm and inches

One published figure set is used across this site for the Kelly tiers, with the second publisher set printed side by side on the comparison guide rather than averaged away.

The Kelly 25 is published at 25 x 19 x 9 cm, which is 9.8 x 7.5 x 3.5 inches. A second publisher set prints the same tier at 25 x 18 x 10 cm — a 1 cm difference in height and depth rather than a different bag. Both are recorded on the comparison guide, and the ladder here uses the 25 x 19 x 9 line that every page on this site follows.

The Kelly ladder runs Kelly 20 (Mini Kelly II) at 20 x 12 x 6 cm, Kelly Pochette at 21.6 x 13.3 x 7 cm, Kelly 25 at 25 x 19 x 9 cm, Kelly 28 at 28 x 22 x 10 cm, Kelly 32 at 32 x 23 x 10.5 cm and Kelly 35 at 35 x 24 x 12 cm. The second publisher set differs from these by 0.5 to 1 cm on one dimension per tier and is printed rather than averaged.

Inch values are the published centimetres converted at 2.54 cm per inch and rounded to one decimal, the same rule the guides use. Rows with no published figure say so.

How to recognise it in a photo

Structured trapezoid, narrower at the top, with one short handle, the hourglass turn-lock in the centre and two straps on the sides.

Not this style when: Two handles with a padlock at the top are a Birkin; a rounded drawstring body without a flap is not a Kelly.

This is the model where photos do the most work, because the silhouette and the handle count are decisive. What photos cannot do is confirm the centimetres, the leather or what the album holds today.

  1. One top handle rather than two: two handles on a relaxed body read as a Birkin, and the handle count is the first check.
  2. A structured trapezoid body that narrows at the top, holding its shape when it is set down empty.
  3. An hourglass-shaped touret turn-lock centred on the front flap, which is the closure; a rectangular Mademoiselle-style plate or a double C belongs to another house.
  4. Two narrow side straps with the leather threaded through them, closing the flap at the sides.
  5. A detachable shoulder strap, which is the functional difference against the Birkin and is visible in a worn photo.
  6. Sellier or Retourne construction: crisp, straight edges and visible outward-facing seams for Sellier, softer rounded corners for Retourne.
  7. A tape across the base, because the tier names are widths - 20 cm is the Mini, 25 cm this tier, 28 cm the classical mid-size - and a photo without scale cannot separate them.
  8. A frame of the bag carried closed on the shoulder, since that is the carry this model is designed for.

What the Kelly 25 carries day to day

The Kelly 25 is the tier where the Kelly family becomes practical, and our Mini Kelly guide states the difference plainly: the 20 cm body takes a standard phone but not a large one, while the 25 takes the everyday set. The single slide pocket inside is the one interior feature the guide records.

A compact daily load fits in the 25: a phone, a wallet, keys and a small pouch. The 9 cm depth is what limits it — a compact sits beside a wallet only if the wallet is not a long one, and a hard sunglasses case is the item that stops it closing comfortably.

The bag is carried by one top handle or on a detachable strap, and it is meant to be carried closed rather than open like a Birkin. That changes the practical ceiling: nothing that stands above the rim travels in a Kelly, so the 19 cm height is the working limit rather than a suggestion.

  • A full-size phone, which is the item the guide uses to separate this tier from the Mini Kelly.
  • A wallet, which is realistic at this size where the Mini Kelly is documented with a slim cardholder instead.
  • Keys and small daily items, which is how the guide summarises the day-to-day load for this tier.
  • A compact, or a similarly sized flat item, in the remaining space within a 9 cm gusset.
  • Not a laptop, a tablet or a water bottle, at any Kelly tier in the small to medium band.
  • Small items that need a home inside the single slide pocket, because organisation inside the body is minimal by design.
  • A load that has to be reached through a closed flap: this bag is carried shut, so anything you need frequently is slower to get to than in an open-top bag.

The list follows the load descriptions in our Hermes Mini Kelly and Birkin versus Kelly guides and the published dimensions, not an inside measurement of a specific bag. Because the body is structured, the published figures track capacity closely, but treat the list as an estimate for the size and confirm your own items against photos of the piece.

Capacity notes are read from the published Kelly 25 figure and the tier ladder in this site’s Kelly guide; interior measurements are not published for this model.

How it compares with the next size up

The Kelly 28 and 32 sit above the 25 in the same ladder, and the Birkin 30 is the nearest body in another line.

Up one tier, the Kelly 28 at 28 x 22 x 10 cm adds 3 cm of width, 3 cm of height and 1 cm of depth; the Kelly 32 at 32 x 23 x 10.5 cm adds 7 cm of width in total. The depth moves by only 1.5 cm across all three tiers, so going up the Kelly ladder buys height and width rather than depth.

The nearest published body in another Hermès line is the Birkin 30 at 30 x 22 x 16 cm: 5 cm wider, 3 cm taller and 7 cm deeper. That is the trade-off the two names stand for — the Kelly is the structured, closed bag, and the Birkin is the roomier one that can be carried open.

Compared values are the published outside measurements listed in the ladder table above.

Leather, hardware, construction and the padlock question

The leather and the construction are the two decisions that change what this bag is like to own, and both are recorded on the site. The padlock question comes up at every size, so it is answered here too.

Leather
Togo and Epsom calfskin are the leathers on record for this style. Togo is the softer, more grained of the two and drapes slightly over time, while Epsom holds a firmer, more even surface - which matters more on a structured Sellier body than on a soft one.
Hardware
Gold and palladium are the two tones recorded for this style. On a Kelly the metal appears on the turn-lock, the strap hardware and, where fitted, the padlock, so the tone is one of the most visible choices on the bag.
Sellier or Retourne
Our comparison page describes the two constructions: Sellier is rigid with crisp edges and a more formal look, Retourne is softer with rounded corners and a more relaxed feel. Most first-time buyers are said to prefer Retourne for daily wear and Sellier for occasions.
Padlock, keys and clochette
Our Mini Kelly guide records that the modern Mini Kelly II carries no padlock, keys or clochette and closes with the touret turn-lock alone, and that this is a difference from the Kelly 25 and larger rather than a feature of the whole family. The specific question worth asking about a 25 is therefore which accessories that piece comes with.
Handle and strap
One top handle plus a detachable strap, recorded in the comparison guide as the practical reason buyers choose a Kelly: the handle gives a formal carry, and the strap allows shoulder or crossbody wear when both hands are needed.

Kelly 25 questions buyers ask before shortlisting

How big is a Kelly 25 compared with a Birkin 25?

The two are the same width and similar in height: 25 x 19 x 9 cm for the Kelly against 25 x 19 x 13 cm for the Birkin in our Birkin guide. The Birkin is 4 cm deeper and has two handles with no shoulder strap, which is what changes the carry rather than the footprint.

Which is better for daily use, the Kelly 25 or the Mini Kelly?

The Kelly 25 for most buyers. The Mini Kelly at 20 x 12 x 6 cm takes a standard phone and a slim cardholder but not a large phone, whereas the guide describes the 25 as a compact everyday bag that holds a full-size phone, a wallet, keys and small daily items.

Does the Kelly 25 come with a detachable strap?

Yes. Our comparison guide records the Kelly as a single-handle bag with a detachable shoulder strap for hand, shoulder or crossbody wear, and notes that it is designed to be carried closed to protect the handle and the flap.

What is the difference between Sellier and Retourne on a Kelly 25?

Sellier is the rigid construction with crisp edges and outward-facing seams, and Retourne is softer with rounded corners. The guide records most first-time buyers choosing Retourne for daily wear and Sellier for occasions that call for a polished silhouette.

Can a photo show whether a Kelly is the 25 or the 28?

Not reliably, because no scale reference is present in a head-on photo of a structured bag. The guide's advice is to send the reference photo with your preferred size and ask for current photos including a measurement of the actual piece.

How much does the Kelly 25 hold?

A full-size phone, a wallet, keys and small daily items, which is the load the guide associates with this tier. It does not hold a tablet or a laptop, and the interior has a single slide pocket rather than compartments.

Why do two figures circulate for the Kelly 25?

Because two publisher sets give the same tier different numbers by about a centimetre. This page and every other page on this site follow 25 x 19 x 9 cm; a second set, printed side by side on the comparison guide, gives 25 x 18 x 10 cm. The differences are 1 cm on height and depth, and both lines are printed rather than reconciled.
